1 Killed, 4 Hurt In Tri-State Tollway Crash
LAKE COUNTY (STMW) -- A 39-year-old man was killed and four people were injured Sunday morning in a three-vehicle crash on the Tri-State Tollway (I-94) in Lake County near Deerfield.
The crash happened about 6:45 a.m. and involved three vehicles -- a tow truck, a van and 4-door car, according to an Illinois State Police Tollway District master sergeant.
The accident occurred on I-94 eastbound at mile-marker 24.75, near Lake-Cook Road, the master sergeant said.
A Chrysler was southbound when it struck the rear of a tow truck, the master sergeant said. Following that crash, the driver of the tow truck exited that vehicle in order to speak with the driver of the Chrysler. State police don't know if the tow truck driver was able to speak to the other driver, because then a third vehicle struck the Chrysler and continued to spin out, striking the driver of the tow truck.
The master sergeant noted that it was the driver of the Chrysler, not the tow truck driver who was standing outside of the vehicles, who died from his injuries.
The man killed was identified as 39-year-old Cesar Salas, of north suburban Prairie View, who was on his way to work when he was killed in the collision, according to Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner Orlando Portillo. The cause of death was undetermined as of Sunday. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, Portillo said.
Four people with non life-threatening injuries were taken from the crash to an Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, the master sergeant said.
