1 Killed, 2 Hurt When Car Hits Hydrant On South Side
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man was killed and two others were seriously injured late Saturday when a car flipped and struck a light pole and fire hydrant on the South Side.
A southbound 2007 Cadillac STS was attempting to make a U-turn onto northbound Stony Island Avenue just before midnight when the driver lost control and flipped the car, hitting a light pole and a fire hydrant, police said.
Alphonia Evans III, 33, of the 7500 block of South Merrill Avenue was dead at the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
A 29-year-old woman was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County and a 25-year-old man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, both in serious-to-critical condition, according to Fire Media Affairs.
Police have been unable to determine who was driving.
Water spewed from the broken hydrant and flooded the street, police said. The city Water Department was called to shut it off.
No citations have been issued, and the police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
