Nearly 20 Shot, 1 Fatally, In Past 2 Days
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The continued unseasonably warm weather made for another violent night in Chicago.
Between 3 p.m. Thursday and 1 a.m. Friday, at least 10 people were shot and wounded around the city, and one was shot and killed. Altogether, at least 19 people have been shot since Wednesday afternoon, and a 20th man was beaten so severely that police initially thought he had been shot.
The first shooting on Thursday happened in broad daylight in the South Side's Grand Boulevard neighborhood. Two people were wounded.
Someone fired shots just before 3:30 p.m. Thursday in the 4700 block of South Champlain Avenue, police said. A 42-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the head, and was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County, while a 49-year-old man was shot in the leg and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Their conditions and further details of the shooting were not known. Nobody was reported in custody Friday morning.
At 7:10 p.m., an 18-year-old woman was shot and wounded in a drive-by incident in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.
The young woman was standing on the sidewalk in the 4500 block of South Hermitage Avenue when she was struck by gunfire from someone in a gray vehicle, police said.
She was taken in serious condition Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound to the abdomen area, police said. No one was in custody Friday morning.
About 10 minutes later, three people were shot and wounded in the Pilsen neighborhood.
They were injured in a drive-by shooting in which gang slogans were yelled, police said.
The victims were shot in the 1900 block of South Throop Street around 7:20 p.m., police said. A man was wounded in the leg, and a woman was in serious condition after being shot in the head. Both were taken to an unidentified hospital, police said. Another person, whose gender is unknown, arrived at an area hospital on his or her own, police said.
No one was in custody in connection with the shooting Friday morning.
Within two hours, two people were injured -- one seriously -- in another shooting in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.
The two people shot said they heard the gunshots ring out at 9:02 p.m. in the 4100 block of W. West End Avenue, then felt pain, police said.
One victim was shot in the chest and is in serious condition at Mount Sinai Hospital early Friday, police said. A second victim sustained a gunshot wound to the body and was in stable condition, also at Mount Sinai.
Further circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately known. No one was in custody early Friday.
At 9:40 p.m., a man was shot and killed in the Far South Side's West Pullman neighborhood.
The man was shot in the chest about 9:40 p.m. near South Lowe Avenue and West 117th Street, said police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro.
Carlos Morales, 32, was dead at the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. He was shot at home.
Calumet Area police detectives are investigating, but nobody was in custody Friday morning.
Shortly afterward, a man was shot multiple times, again in the West Garfield Park neighborhood, by a suspect who demanded money from him.
The man, 45, was shot about 9:49 p.m. at 410 S. Kilpatrick Ave., police said. He was inside a vehicle and was shot after the suspect approached and demanded money.
He drove himself to Loretto Hospital, but was later transferred to Stroger Hospital, police said.
In the most recent reported incident, a man was shot on the Near West Side, on the former site of the ABLA Homes public housing development.
The shooting happened just after midnight in the 1300 block of West 13th Street, police said.
An adult man reported hearing shots and then feeling pain, police said. He was listed in stable condition at Stroger Hospital early Friday.
This was the second consecutive night plagued by violence in Chicago. At least eight people were also shot between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning, and a ninth was beaten so severely that police thought he was shot.
The violent incidents between 4 p.m. Wednesday and 1 a.m. Thursday happened on all sides of the city in the Chicago Lawn, Hamilton Park, Morgan Park, Rogers Park, South Austin, Washington Park and West Englewood neighborhoods.
No one died in the earlier round of shootings, but in one incident in the 2700 block of West 64th Street, a man had been beaten to the point where he was covered in blood. He was reported in critical condition, and police initially thought he had been shot.
Several of the Wednesday night shootings also had multiple victims. An incident in the 1400 block of West Estes Avenue in Rogers Park, and an incident in the 300 block of North Pine Avenue in South Austin, each wounded two men.
