1 Dead, 6 Wounded In Overnight Shootings In Chicago
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Shootings across the city left one man dead and least six others wounded in a four-hour span Monday evening, police said.
The fatal shooting happened in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side.
Jose Rodriquez, 30, was shot in the head about 7 p.m. in the 6000 block of South Talman Avenue, authorities said.
Rodriquez, who lived on the same block where he was killed, was pronounced dead on the scene at 7:59 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
Rodriquez had documented gang affiliations, police said.
The most recent shooting happened about 8:40 p.m., when a 22-year-old man walked into Loretto Hopsital with a gunshot wound to the hand, police said.
He told police he was shot during a robbery in the 300 block of South Lotus Street, police said.
About 7:10 p.m., a man in his 20s was shot in the leg in the West Side Lawndale neighborhood. Details on the attack in the 1600 block of South Homan Avenue were not yet known, but the man was taken in "stable" condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said.
About 6:30 p.m., a man was shot in the West Side Austin neighborhood, police said.
He was shot in the neck in the 900 bock of North Lavergne Avenue, and is now in "stable" condition, police said. Paramedics initially took the 27-year-old to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, according to Fire Media Affairs.
About 6 p.m. another man was shot and critically hurt, this time in the 5000 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, authorities said.
He told police he heard gunfire while he was outside a restaurant, and was shot multiple times in the buttocks and lower back, police said.
The 21-year-old was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, according to fire media. Police later said the man's condition had stabilized.
About 5:40 p.m., a store employee shot a person trying to rob a business in the 2900 block of West Devon Avenue, in the West Ridge neighborhood on the North Side.
An employee shot the would-be robber, who fled but was captured about 12:20 a.m. Tuesday when he walked into Saint Margaret Mercy Healthcare in Hammond, Ind., to seek treatment for multiple gunshot wounds, police said.
Charges were pending against the 25-year-old suspect as he was en route to Chicago early Tuesday, police said.
Another person, a 23-year-old man, was hit over the head with a pistol during the attack, according to fire media. Paramedics took him to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston in "stable" condition.
The evening's first shooting happened about 5 p.m. in the South Side Auburn Gresham neighborhood.
A man, 23, was shot multiple times in the 8700 block of South Racine Avenue, police and fire officials said. He was in critical condition after being shot in the chest, leg, groin and arm, authorities said.
Area detectives are investigating the shootings.
