1 Dead, 4 Wounded In Weekend Violence
CHICAGO (STMW) -- One person is dead and four others wounded from gun violence across the city this weekend, including three men who were shot in the Gage Park neighborhood.
The most recent shooting occurred Saturday, and left a man was critically in the Southwest Side Gage Park neighborhood, police said.
Police say several people were in a basement apartment in the 5400 block of South Sawyer Avenue about 7:11 p.m. when two armed men entered the apartment looking for a person. The men found who they were looking for and a struggle broke out. A 53-year-old man intervened and was shot in the abdomen, police said.
He was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said.
The armed men fled southbound on Sawyer Avenue and are not in custody, police said.
The only homicide of the weekend so far happened Friday night in the Northwest Side Portage Park neighborhood.
About 8:30 p.m. police found 21-year-old Manuel Hernandez "unresponsive" with a gunshot wound to the chest in a hallway of his apartment building, authorities said.
Hernandez was taken from the crime scene, in the 3900 block of North Central Avenue, to Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 8:58 p.m., authorities said.
Police on Saturday night had no additional details on the shooting and no one was in custody.
On Friday night two men were shot in the Southwest Side Gage Park neighborhood.
The men were walking in the 5200 block of South California Avenue at 11:33 p.m. when someone started shooting, according to police News Affairs.
One man, 19, was shot in the back and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said. The other man, 20, was shot in the side and taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County.
Both were in good condition early Saturday, police said.
