One Dead, 3 Wounded In Uptown Shootings
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two shootings about two hours apart and just two blocks away from each other left a man dead and three others wounded Friday night in the Uptown neighborhood.
The first shooting happened about 7:15 p.m. in the 5200 block of North Winthrop Avenue, police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala said.
A 23-year-old man was walking down the street when a gunman approached him and opened fire with a handgun, striking the victim in both legs, Zala said. The victim was taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital in an unknown condition.
In an email sent to area residents Saturday afternoon, Ald. Harry Osterman (48th Ward) said the shooting was believed to be drug-related. Police originally reported that this shooting had occurred in the 2900 block of North Woodard Street.
About two hours later, a man was killed and two others were hurt in a shooting two blocks south.
The three were standing on the sidewalk in the 5000 block of North Winthrop Avenue about 9:30 p.m. when two males walked up and started shooting, police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said.
They were all initially taken in critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, according to Fire Media Affairs.
Aswell Selmon, 46, who lived in the 5000 block of North Winthrop Avenue, was pronounced dead at Illinois Masonic at 9:59 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. He was shot in the thigh, abdomen and buttocks, Greer said.
Another man, 32, was shot in the knee and ankle, Greer said. The third man, 29, was shot in the knee, abdomen and shoulder. Their conditions were stable by early Saturday, she said.
In his email on Saturday, Osterman said police had two people in custody for this shooting and guns were recovered.
Osterman also said that in light of the violence on Winthrop, additional police units have been assigned to patrol the community.
Area North detectives are investigating both shootings.
