1 Dead, 1 Injured In 4-Vehicle Crash On Kennedy Expressway
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A four-vehicle crash during Friday's morning rush shut down all lanes of the inbound Kennedy Expressway near Harlem Avenue on the Northwest Side, and left one person dead and another injured.
A purple Dodge Caravan was driving southbound in the far right lane of the Kennedy at Harlem at 7:37 a.m. when it struck the back of a white Ford pickup at "a significant rate of speed," according to Illinois State Police.
The collision caused the pickup to hit the rear of a blue Chevrolet Cruze, which in turn hit the rear of a purple Ford Explorer, police said. The pickup, the Cruze and the Explorer were all stopped at the time of the crash, and the Caravan did not brake or slow down before the collision.
The male driver of the Caravan was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was later pronounced dead, police said. The Cook County medical examiner's office could not immediately confirm the death Friday morning.
The 42-year-old man who was driving the Cruze was taken to Presence Resurrection Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, police said. Fire Media Affairs spokesman Jeffrey Lyle said he was in fair condition.
All southbound lanes of the Kennedy were closed at Harlem for investigation as of 10:12 a.m., according to police. Traffic was getting by on the right shoulder.
The crash also shut down the Harlem Avenue on-ramp to the inbound Kennedy, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.
