1 Dead, 1 Hurt When Car Hits CTA Bus
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Two men were injured, one fatally, when the car they were in crossed into the path of a CTA bus and struck the bus head-on in the South Side Englewood neighborhood Sunday morning.
Police were notified of the crash at 67th and Halsted streets about 7:20 a.m., according to police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez.
According to preliminary information, the two men were in a car that crossed into the bus lane while trying to make a left-hand turn, CTA spokeswoman Lambrini Lukidis said. The bus was headed south and the car struck the bus head-on, according to Fire Media Affairs.
None of the seven people on the bus wanted medical treatment, but two men who were in the car were injured, Fire Media said.
The passenger from the car -- a Ford Taurus, according to unconfirmed dispatch reports -- was dead on the scene, according to Fire Media.
Simeon Allen, 30, of the 0-99 block of West 62nd Street, was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital at 8:07 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
The driver -- identified by police as Liafem Okundaya -- was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he was listed in serious to critical condition, according to Fire Media.
He was cited for driving too fast for conditions.
The CTA's No. 8 Halsted buses were rerouted in both directions around the scene of the crash for nearly three hours, but by about 10:45 a.m. they were again making their normal stops in the area.
