Autumn at It's Best...

A seriously simple week ahead from the weather department. Today marks the first full day of Autumn and it certainly feels like it...a bit brisk and crisp but all in all a lovely day. High pressure is centered to our West while low pressure is centered to our east. Due to downstream blocking in the North Atlantic, these two features won't move much from their present positions for days and days. The result will be sun filled days with high temps close to normal levels...around 70...and clear cool nights with a few spots dipping into the 30s. There is any sign of rain at this time, at least not through next weekend!

Record Cold...

Many of you slept through it but earlier this morning the temperature bottomed out at 44 degrees in Boston establishing a new record low...the old one was 45 degrees set back in 1986. Much of interior New England, especially across the low-lying countryside saw the first frost of the season too. Cold high pressure is settling in from Canada so these next 24 hours will feel more like October...in fact, for many, tonight will be colder than last night. Because of that, Frost Advisories have once again been posted for Interior New England and may need to be expanded perhaps into MetroWest. I don't expect Boston to be colder however thanks to the urban heat island effect...buildings and pavement absorb the sun's energy and radiate it all night long like a camp fire.

One More Day...

We remain in a very warm and soupy air mass for one more day. A cold front is slowly working in from the west but it won't pass through until tomorrow morning. So temps will again climb well into the 80s and may even touch 90 in a few communities. Of course the air is also incredibly humid today and with an approaching cold front the chances are rising for showers and thunderstorms. While most of the day thunderstorm action will be isolated, tonight as the front moves through the storms get more numerous and may still be strong. One big concern is the timing of these storms with the Pats game this evening...it's going to be a close call but signs are pointing to a later arrival of widespread storms which would be a good thing for the game.

Oppressive...

I've only used that word a handful of times this Summer and I don't use it loosely but today it's applicable. The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for the majority of Eastern MA for the afternoon...this means that the temperature and humidity together will make it feel like close to 100 degrees! There won't be much relief in the State but some will be found on Cape Ann and Cape Cod with a SW wind direction moderating temps just a bit. There is also a slight chance for thunderstorms this evening within this hot and humid air mass.

Heat...

A warm front is working through the area...it marks the dividing line between cooler Autumn-like air and hotter mid Summer-like air. Where they clash we are seeing showers and thunderstorms, a line has formed and is marching across the State and it won't clear the coast until mid-afternoon. After they pass by, skies will brighten, temps and humidity will steadily climb. Our stay in the warm sector won't be long but long enough to yield oppressive heat and humidity. High temps should reach the lower 90s if not the mid 90s and when you factor in the humidity, "feels-like" temps will reach 100 degrees! Thursday will be another hot one and very sticky one too but an approaching cold front will likely trigger a line of strong thunderstorms late in the day and evening. In fact, the timing right now doesn't look good for the Pats Thursday night game with the Jets...there's a strong chance for that line to go through during the game.

Autumn-like...

A cold front is slicing through New England...showers are in the process of ending and clouds will thin out this afternoon. The wind will swing into the north after the passage, this will bring down both cooler and drier air for tonight and tomorrow. Under a clear sky and diminishing wind, temps will fall back into the 40s for the suburbs and about 50 degrees downtown. The Autumn chill will take time to negate on Friday but bright sunshine will help and temps will max out just shy of 70.

Steamy Again...

The holiday weekend was one big downpour with numerous showers and thunderstorms ruining outdoor plans. Some towns picked up over 3 inches of rain...essentially getting a months worth of rain in one weekend. The tropical air is still hanging around so we are in for one more unsettled day. With developing sunshine and an approaching cold front, storms will begin to fire by late morning and shift into Eastern MA for the end of the day. Today's storms will contain the very heavy rain, and possibly wind and hail. The front will pass through this evening opening up the gates for refreshing air to funnel in.
