The Red Sox DH had a big contract year, batting .309 with 29 homers and 96 RBI in 2011. He made his seventh All-Star game with Boston, and said he would like to return. His demand of a two-year deal might keep the Sox away though.
CL Jonathan Papelbon
The closer will be a free agent for the first time in his career, and will likely command a big-money contract. He had a great 2011, minus the final game, going 31-for-34 in save opportunities with a 4-1 record and ERA of 2.94. With Daniel Bard not ready to take over the 9th inning, the Red Sox should work hard to retain Papelbon.
SS Marco Scutaro
The Red Sox have a team option for $6 million, along with a $1.5 million buyout on Scutaro. The shortstop has a player option for $3 million, but may take the buyout in hopes of signing another multi-year deal somewhere. He played in 113 games in 2011, batting .299 with 118 hits and 54 RBI.
C Jason Varitek
The soon-to-be 40-year old captain played well in his first year as a backup, hitting 11 home runs and driving in 36 in 68 games. It may be worth bringing the veteran catcher back because of his leadership and superb game-calling. If Tek retires, Josh Beckett would miss him the most…
SP Erik Bedard
After being acquired from the Mariners at the trade deadline, Bedard went 1-2 for Boston. He was serviceable, but very unreliable, which has become his reputation. If the price is right, he may be worth signing for a year or two, but the Red Sox should steer clear of anything more and with a high dollar amount
P Tim Wakefield
The Knuckleballer won his 200th career game in 2011, but other than that it was a rough go for the 45-year-old. He finished the season 7-8 with a 5.12 ERA, and spent most of his time in the bullpen. He got his spot back in the rotation when injuries ravaged the Sox. While he hopes to return, it’s doubtful Boston will want him back.
RF JD Drew
Drew has stated he will likely return now that his 5-year, $70 million deal is done. Drew played in just 81 games, hitting four home runs with 22 RBI. The Red Sox will likely search for a replacement for Drew outside of the organization.
