Important Advice Before Heading To London Olympics
/ CBS News
The WBZ London Eye interns have only been in London for a couple of days, but we already have advice for anyone attending the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Arrive Early:
Whether you’re going to the Opening Ceremony or Westminster Abbey, there are going to be huge lines everywhere. London during the summertime is busy enough. We waited in line 45 minutes for the London Eye! So, if you throw the Olympics in there, you can imagine Disney World-size lines all over the city. Most spectators will be using the Tube to get around the city, so make sure you give yourself extra time to get to your destination. Speaking of the Tube...
Stay Cool on the Tube:
The Tube gets very warm! There is no air conditioning and it gets quite toasty even with London’s cool summers. Add the extra bodies here for the Olympics, and you’ll really be feeling the heat. Bring water and a hand-fan to stay cool as you travel to your destination.
Make a Budget:
While the pound may have taken a dip in the past couple years, it still dominates the US dollar. Keep the exchange rate (roughly 1.5 dollars to the pound) in the back of your mind to make sure you have enough money to get back to the states. Oh, and if you decided to bring home Olympic presents for the whole family, remember the Mickey Mouse rule -- Any item that has Mickey Mouse on it, or in the case of the Olympics, Wenlock and Mandeville, will be at least twice the normal price.
Enjoy the Freebies:
Bummed out you didn’t get tickets for the men’s finals of the 100 meter-dash? It’s okay, neither did we...cheer up! There are five Olympic events that are free to the public: Road Cycling, Race Walk, Triathlon, Marathon, and Swimming Marathon. Most of those events will take place all over London and will pass landmarks like Big Ben and Buckingham Palace. And while you’re watching the marathon runners pass Parliament...
Take Lots of Pictures!
There will be countless photo opportunities and you're going to want to capture them all!
