Zolak: Spikes' Car Was Traveling In Excess Of 120 Miles Per Hour

BOSTON (CBS) - Brandon Spikes' second stint with the New England Patriots ended almost as soon as it began.

After a very suspicious incident over the weekend, the Patriots announced Monday morning they are cutting ties with the linebacker, releasing him from the roster.

Spikes' car, a Mercedes, was found abandoned on the median strip of I-495 early Sunday morning. An mbrace operator (Mercedes' version of OnStar) told police that the driver of that vehicle reported to have hit a deer on the highway.

However, in roughly the same area of highway, a driver of a Nissan Murano reported being rear-ended. Three people in that Nissan Murano were treated for injuries.

State Police are investigating whether the two incidents were connected.

Shortly after noon on Monday, 98.5 The Sports Hub's Scott Zolak received some more information regarding Spikes' abandoned luxury car.

"Both vehicles, the Maybach and the Nissan, have been taken to the police barracks. They are going to begin the investigation and probably start to match up the location, the hits, and did the front of the Maybach match up with the rear end of the Nissan. Is there any paint from the rear end of the Nissan that is on the front end of the Maybach, rather than a hoof, deer antler, a form of blood or any deer fur?" Zolak said.

He continued, "Here are the estimations of what happened on the scene: they estimated that the speed prior to impact was in excess of maybe 120 miles per hour, that Brandon Spikes' car was going. They think that the car was traveling at 120 or more miles per hour. The speed at impact was somewhere between 80 and 85 mph. The second the impact happened, there were skid marks of 275 feet. [The car] was traveling in excess of 120 miles per hour, it hit the Nissan at 80-85 mph and the skid marks were in excess of 275 feet. Needless to say [the driver] was moving pretty darn good."

Police at this point are trying to determine the identity of the driver in this potential hit and run incident.
