Zolak: 'Edelman Is The New Troy Brown'
BOSTON (CBS) - With Wes Welker in Denver, Rob Gronkowski out for the year and Aaron Hernandez in jail, slot receiver Julian Edelman is Tom Brady's new go-to weapon.
After an injury riddled start to his career, Edelman is finally healthy - and as a result, productive. Edelman's amassed 1,056 yards on 105 catches in 2013, making the loss of Wes Welker to free agency all the more palatable.
Adam Jones: Lack Of An Outside Threat Still A Problem For The Patriots
However, his role with the team is not limited to just offense: Edelman has the highest career punt return average among active players, and has even spent some time on defense for the Patriots in emergency situations.
The Swiss Army knife that is Julian Edelman drew high praise from one Scott Zolak on Monday morning, who referred to him as "the new Troy Brown" for his versatility.
"He in essence is your new Troy Brown, and you know how I feel about Troy - he's a Patriot Hall of Famer," said Zolak to Mike Flynn. "I don't want to say he's more talented than Brown, but he's got a burst that Troy never had."
"Troy had absolutely great football instincts, he would do anything for the team. Edelman has the ability to take that to the next level. He's the guy that's replaced Welker, not Amendola."
Pick-A-Side: Who Do You Want The Patriots To Play In Divisional Round?
On Amendola replacing Welker, Sports Hub host and former 11-year NFL veteran Mike Flynn thinks that the Patriots were bailed out by the emergence of Julian Edelman and what he's been able to do.
Both Zolak and Flynn agree that free-agent-to-be Julian Edelman is due for a big pay day in the offseason.
