Zolak & Bertrand: Claude Julien Hasn't Done Enough To Get Fired
BOSTON (CBS) - After a painful end to the 2014-15 season, 98.5 The Sports Hub's Zolak & Bertrand discussed what the Bruins should do with coaching and management personnel in the offseason.
The Bruins entered last week with a three-point lead in the Eastern Conference wild card standings, but ended the season losers of three straight and out of the postseason.
"They scored four freaking goals in three games; the final three games when their backs are against the wall," said Zolak. "I'm not disappointed anymore, I'm angry. We should be talking playoff hockey."
The radio duo noted that differing opinions from fans regarding general manager Peter Chiarelli and head coach Claude Julien, and talked about the possibility of one or both of them getting fired.
After stewing on the topic for the entire weekend, Marc Bertrand came to a realization.
"Ultimately I don't think [Julien] has done enough to deserve to be fired," said Bertrand. "He didn't set this roster. He didn't pick who was on it and who wasn't. I understand he has to work with his GM, but at the end of the day what was the Bruins' biggest problem this year? Was it coaching? I think it was the roster!"
Bertrand places most of the blame on general manager Peter Chiarelli, who over the last year has had made questionable roster decisions.
"I wouldn't be shocked if there's a decision made where Peter [Chiarelli] goes and Claude [Julien] stays," said Bertrand. "He's done a great job for the Bruins, but his last couple of years have not been good."
Both Chiarelli and Julien addressed the media on Monday, leaving some to believe that they will be back next season. But as Felger & Mazz producer James Stewart astutely points out, it wouldn't be the first time the Bruins said one thing and did another.
