Zagat Survey: No One Tips Better Than Boston Diners

BOSTON (CBS) – The people of Boston may have a reputation of being a little chilly toward others, but when it comes to tipping, a new survey shows no one else treats their waiters and waitresses better.

The popular restaurant review guide Zagat surveyed more than 9,000 diners across the country, and found that Boston is the city with the highest reported average tip at 20 percent. The nationwide average is 18.9 percent.

Coming in just behind Boston is Philadelphia at 19.9 percent. The city with the lowest average is San Antonio at 17.1 percent.

The Zagat survey is chock full of interesting trends in dining around the country. It found that Boston diners spend an average of $43 per person when eating dinner at a restaurant, the second-highest amount in the U.S. besides New York.

The high cost of eating out may be why Boston diners go out for dinner the least at only 3.8 times per week when compared to other cities.

The survey also looked at diners' pet peeves. Thirty percent of people in Boston said noise was their biggest complaint.

One other discovery was that 63 percent of Boston diners say they now make restaurant reservations online instead of over the phone.
