Young Man Shot, Killed In Lawrence Nightclub
LAWRENCE (CBS) – A man was shot and killed at a nightclub in Lawrence early Friday morning.
Police were called to Bali's on Essex Street just before 1 a.m. for a report of a fight.
Officers found a young man inside dead from gunshot wounds.
He was later identified as Joselo "Jose" Campusano, 21, of Lawrence.
A witness told WBZ-TV's Susie Steimle the victim and the shooter knew each other and the gunman followed the young man into a restroom, shot him and then left the bar.
On Friday, Zunny Cruz, Campusano's cousin, says Joselo was a good man and she can't imagine how he ended up shot to death in the bathroom of Bally's Nightclub on Essex Street.
"He's really friendly. He has a little daughter. He's mostly stayed at home with us," she said.
She hugged her father after he gave a statement to police, and helped positively identify Campusano as the murder victim.
"He hasn't cried all day," she said. "This is the first time so he's not doing too good."
Lawrence Mayor Daniel Rivera stopped by the scene Friday morning and he says the city has worked hard to try and stop this kind of violence.
"The thing to take away from this is that the police were on the scene and they're doing the best they can," he said. "I'm sure we'll get to the bottom of what happened here, but this is actually a rarity. We hadn't had one in a very long time."
He added "We've also been harder on the clubs. Anything from a fight to a stabbing gets you shut down significantly."
An autopsy will be done in Boston.
No arrests have been made.
