Thirty-eight-year-old Edward Cordwell Jr. was crossing Temple Street around 2 p.m. with his girlfriend's four-year-old daughter when they were hit by a pickup truck. The girl was on her bike at the time and they were not at a crosswalk.
The truck driver, 46-year-old Richard Brown of Attleboro, stopped. He spoke to police and has not been charged at this point in the investigation.
Cordwell died at Brockton Hospital.
The girl, whose name has not been released, was knocked unconscious. She was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital, where she is recovering.
Witnesses say the pickup went around an SUV that had stopped to let them cross the street. The bike was crushed under the front of the pickup truck.
One witness told WBZ-TV the man pushed the girl out of the way and saved her life.
