Yarmouth Considers Pool Safety Changes After Two Near Drownings
YARMOUTH (CBS) - Kids splash around in the pool on a sunny day at the Town 'N Country in Yarmouth, but Red Curry keeps a watchful eye on his son Simon. Curry said, "Anything can happen in a split second. It doesn't take long for an accident to happen."
After two near drownings in Yarmouth, one in the very pool Curry is swimming in, he's even more vigilant.
"It did open my eyes that anything can happen at anytime."
An 8-year-old girl from Ashland was pulled from the pool and revived by a good Samaritan at the Town 'N Country Sunday morning. Just two days later a 20-year-old woman from Russia was found lifeless at the bottom of the indoor pool at the Yarmouth Resort and was saved by rescue crews.

There are 91 pools in Yarmouth where a pool safety program is already in place. Now town officials are looking to see what else can be done to keep everyone safe. Bruce Murphy, the director of the Yarmouth Health Department said the town requires motels to have somebody with first aid, water safety and CPR on site. They don't have to be at the pool but they have to be able to respond.
Deputy Police Chief Steven Xiarhos said one option that's being talked about is security cameras. Xiarhos said, "We think one of the great options is electronic monitoring where cameras could be on the pool and someone could monitor them. That might be something to talk about."
In both recent cases the pools were up to code and staff was properly trained.
The 8-year-old girl who was saved has been released from the hospital. 20-year-old Ainura Akhmetova is still in critical condition at Cape Cod Hospital.
