WWII Pilot Missing Since 1943 Buried In Arlington
ARLINGTON (AP) - The remains of a World War II pilot who had been missing since his plane crashed in New Guinea almost 70 years ago have been buried in his Massachusetts hometown.
Richard Ryrholm Jr.'s family held burial services Saturday in Arlington, where the U.S. Army Air Corps lieutenant was raised before his death at age 19 in September 1943.
His remains and some belongings were recovered when a military team discovered and excavated the wreckage on a hillside near the city of Lae a few years ago.
Ryrholm and three siblings all served in the war, but he was the only one killed in action. He was buried Saturday beside his parents, brother and sister-in-law.
The Department of Defense says almost 73,800 service members from World War II are still missing.
