Officials Say Fixing Leaks At Worcester's Union Station Could Cost Up To $6 Million
WORCESTER (CBS) -- Leaks that have plagued Worcester's Union Station for more than a decade could soon be fixed, but shoring up the station will come at a cost.
The Worcester Regional Transit Authority is looking to fix leaks at the train station that sprang up shortly after it re-opened in 2000. With a potentially long-term fix on the horizon, officials say plugging the leaks could cost millions and cause travel woes.
Dripping water from the train platforms has damaged walls and ceilings while the city used tar to close cracks allowing water in. Now, officials are seeking a new solution, weighing short, medium and long-term fixes.
Much of the cost of repairs would likely be eligible for reimbursement, officials say, but any repairs will disrupt travel.
The city is expected to make a final decision on the leaks next month.
