On Wednesday, someone shot a man three times near Chandler and Oxford Streets. Earlier this week, investigators say a man killed his ex-girlfriend right outside a grocery store.
It's a concentrated, tactical effort to clamp down on the street violence of Worcester's Main South, a square mile of small businesses and public housing sprinkled with rehab clinics, soup kitchens, and homeless shelters. It's a neighborhood where residents tread carefully.
WBZ-TV's Ken MacLeod reports
WBZ took a ride with an officer who has patrolled the streets for nearly two decades, and is now overseeing the uniformed crackdown.
"The foot beat here is pretty effective," says Lt. Mike McKiernan. "Ninety percent of the citizens that come up and talk to us are incredibly thankful, they enjoy having us out there."
Business owners are happy to see the increased police presence, because the violence is hurting their bottom-line.
