Worcester Police Officer Charged With Rape

WORCESTER (CBS) -  A Worcester police officer has been arrested on a rape charge.

Officer Rajat Sharda, 32, of Hudson, was taken into custody Monday evening and arraigned Tuesday at Worcester District Court on charges of aggravated rape, open and gross lewdness and lascivious behavior, armed robbery, intimidation of a witness and threats with the intent to extort by police.

Worcester Police released very little information about the alleged incident, saying in a statement that Sharda's arrest "is the result of an investigation into a complaint that was made to the Worcester Police Department regarding an incident that occurred at the Bancroft Tower between an adult female and Mr. Sharda."

Sharda is now on paid administrative leave until the investigation is finished.

Worcester police said Sharda was hired in September 2008, laid off in February 2009 and reinstated on December 25, 2011.
