Worcester Native, Mass. Golf Legend Paul Harney Dies At 82
BOSTON (CBS) – Paul Harney, one of Massachusetts most accomplished golfers, died Wednesday at the age of 82.
Harney, winner of seven PGA tour events, passed away at his Falmouth home according to the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.
The Worcester native played full time on the PGA Tour from 1955 to 1962, and continued to play part time from 1963 to 1973. He won his first event in 1957, beating Arnold Palmer by five-strokes in the Carling Open in Flint, Michigan. He won back-to-back LA Opens in 1964 and 1965. Harney won his final tour event at the age of 42, taking home the Andy Williams San Diego Open in 1972.
He was honored as the PGA Golf Professional of the Year in 1974.
Harney, who won the NCAA Individual title in 1952 as a senior at Holy Cross, also won five straight Massachusetts Open titles.
He was elected into the PGA Golf Professional Hall of Fame in 2005.
In 1967 Harney and his wife, Patti, opened the Paul Harney Golf Course in East Falmouth.
