New Program Aims To Help Worcester Kindergartners Save For College

BOSTON (CBS) -- Massachusetts State Treasurer Deb Goldberg has announced a new program to help Kindergartners save for college.

As part of the program, each child will receive $50 to start a college savings account. The money will come from charity foundations and other private donors, Goldberg told WBZ NewsRadio 1030.

"There's going to be almost 2,200 Kindergarten kids next year," Goldberg said.

The program, called "Seed MA" will begin next school year in Worcester.

"Worcester is the heart of the Commonwealth," Goldberg said.

The city's 13 colleges and universities will also be involved in the initiative, "holding tuition for college or vocational training below $30,000 of tuition," she said.

Eventually, Goldberg hopes to take the program statewide.
