Worcester Area To Hold Meetings About Asian Longhorned Beetle
WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) -- Federal authorities have scheduled a series of meetings in central Massachusetts in the coming week to discuss ongoing efforts to rid the region of the destructive Asian longhorned beetle.
The meetings are an opportunity for the public to learn about plans to chemically treat more than 95,000 trees this spring.
Between April 25 and early July, the trees will be injected with an insecticide that's proven effective against the bugs.
The meetings are scheduled for Worcester on Monday; Boylston on Tuesday; West Boylston on Wednesday; and Holden on Thursday.
Nearly 30,000 trees that were either infected with the bug, or at risk of infection, have been removed since the invasive insect was first detected in the area in August 2008.
The beetles bore holes in the hardwoods, eventually killing them.
