'Women On 20s' Proposes Harriet Tubman Replace Andrew Jackson On Currency
BOSTON (CBS) – A group featuring a young Massachusetts girl has selected the historically significant woman they hope will replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill.
"Women on 20s," an organization that is proposing President Obama replace Jackson's face on the $20 bill with a woman, announced on Tuesday that Harriet Tubman is the female figure they ask be added to the bill.
The group conducted polling for 10 weeks on its website before announcing its proposal to the White House.
Sofia, a fourth-grade student from Massachusetts, wrote a letter to Obama earlier this year requesting a woman be added to U.S. currency.
Obama responded to Sofia, saying her determination was impressive. The president invited Sofia to a White House Easter event.
Women on 20s adopted Sofia as a junior ambassador as a result of her efforts.
The organization invited supporters to join a "virtual march" to the White House by using the hashtag #DearMrPresident on social media to bring attention to the cause.
"Think of it as a chant for women's equality & value that will ring across the internet in tweets and Facebook messages heard loud and clear in Washington," Women on 20s wrote.
