Woman With Rare Lung Disease To Bike In Cape Cod Race

ROCKLAND (CBS) -- A 70-year-old Rockland woman afflicted by a rare lung disease is giving her all, riding her bike to find a cure for herself and others.

Alyce Yout is ready to ride her beautiful and well-used Trek bike, tricked out in a very unusual way.

"Where you would put maybe books or something to carry on the back of your bike, I have to put an oxygen tank," she says.

That's because Alyce was diagnosed with a rare genetic lung disease more than 23 years ago.

She has Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, which has altered her life significantly, but it won't stop her from riding her bike.

Alyce rides 7-to-10 miles a day, as she gets ready for the Escape to the Cape fundraising ride from Sept. 25-to-27.

She participates in the ride every year with a group of friends on Team Alpha-1.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the team had raised more than $25,000 of their $75,000.

She'll ride part of the way from Plymouth-to-Provincetown.

As long as she is able, Alyce says she'll continue to ride in the race.
