Woburn Police Officer Awarded Congressional Badge Of Bravery

WOBURN (CBS) - A Woburn police officer has been awarded one of the nation's highest honors: The Congressional Badge of Bravery.

Officer Mark Gibbons received the award Monday at the federal courthouse, where praise was bestowed on him by U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz, and Senators Elizabeth Warren and William Cowen, who said, "It's an honor to meet a real hero."

It was September of 2011, when a jewelry store robbery in Woburn turned into a shootout.

Officer Robert DiNapoli was wounded, and when Officer Gibbons pulled up, the suspect started shooting at him. "I put five rounds through my windshield at him but he was still standing," says Gibbons. "He was a big guy, he was about 260 pounds."

So even though the suspect was wounded, Gibbons had to tackle him.

"This was a team effort, not just me," he said.
