Man Shot At Winthrop Fourth Of July Weekend Party
WINTHROP (CBS) -- Two men have been arrested and charged in the shooting of another man at a Winthrop Fourth of July house party.
The shooting happened early Sunday morning at a house party on Revere Street. The victim, a 27-year-old Stoneham man, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital and is currently in stable but critical condition.
The Suffolk County District Attorney's office said that man is expected to survive.
The two men arrested in the shooting, Andrew Guilfoyle, 32, the owner of the home, and Jared Damelio, a guest at the party, were both charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
According to the Suffolk DA's office, the victim is believed to have been involved in a fist fight that occurred at the party earlier in the night. Police said they broke up the fight and sent several people home.
The Suffolk DA's office said the victim returned to the party with a group of people, who were unarmed.
When another fight broke out, the Suffolk DA's office says Damelio struck the victim with a baton and told Guilfoyle, "Get the gun." They said Guilfoyle grabbed a rifle, which he owned legally, and shot the victim once.
Fred Correia, who lives in the neighborhood, heard the shooting play out.
"I heard a phrase that 'You're a Judas' or something like that. Then I heard a gunshot," he recalled.
One woman said her daughter saw the shooting, and screamed for her to call 911.
"She heard someone say, 'oh my god, he has a gun,'" she told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Kim Tunnicliffe. "While I was on the phone with police, I heard a gunshot, then my daughter said, 'Tell them to bring an ambulance.'"
Police said Guilfoyle admitted to owning and using the rifle.
"There are no other suspects we are looking for," said Winthrop Police Chief Terrence Delehanty. "This was an isolated incident, the people of Winthrop are safe."
Damelio and Guilfoyle are expected to be arraigned Tuesday in East Boston Municipal Court.
