2 Dead, Man To Be Charged With OUI After Crash In Winthrop
WINTHROP (CBS) -- Two people were killed after a coupe convertible hit a parked truck and flipped over in Winthrop Sunday afternoon.
Mass. State Police said the driver will be charged with OUI "as well as other charges pertaining to the deaths of the two passengers."
One passenger, a 29-year-old Beverly woman, was declared dead at the scene.
The other passenger, a 28-year-old Winthrop woman was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital but later died of her injuries. Her family told WBZ-TV she lived just steps from the crash scene.
According to State Police, the 30-year-old Winthrop man driving has non-life threatening injuries and was also taken to Mass. General.
Winthrop Shore Drive was closed from about 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. while police investigated. It is unclear what caused the crash.
"I just heard the bang and then I heard an oh my god. I looked, I saw a guy who was half in, half out of the car, the passenger side window," said witness Mike Ventre.
He then dialed 911.
"At some point, the fire chief just asked everybody around to help because they needed to lift the car up. We all went over there, we lifted the car up and unfortunately, lifting the car up the deceased person is the one that they were pulling out after we lifted the car up," Ventre said.
Those that live on Winthrop Shore Drive said the road is dangerous.
"I think that speed is definitely an issue. People on cell phones is an issue," one woman said.
