Winter Storm Hits Southern New England
BOSTON (CBS) - Commuters are getting a double whammy with the winter storm that hit Massachusetts - a tough afternoon commute on Tuesday and they have to turn around and do it all over again on Wednesday as snow falls through the night.
As if driving wasn't bad enough, Michael Weekes had to stop along the Massachusetts Turnpike to de-ice his car for a long ride home. "Unfortunately I have to go all the way to Western Massachusetts. It's slick but I'll get there," he said.
Snow building up on the Turnpike began to intensify during the afternoon and evening commute. The timing is the worst for drivers. Leaving work early didn't help Bill Rigby who still hit difficult conditions. "It's coming down quick. Twenty minutes ago it was not so bad but now it's quick and slippery."

Ice was a problem for a lot of drivers with the cold temperatures and enough to cause a flat tire for Chris Leone who needed some emergency service to get home. "I think ice popped inside the tire," he said.

The salt and sand was plentiful as plow drivers made as many early passes as possible. There was no leaving work early for Bob Biron also headed to Western Massachusetts. "I have to be right back to Boston tomorrow," he said.

In Boston, a snow emergency and parking ban went into effect at 6 p.m. School is closed in the city on Wednesday. Mayor Marty Walsh says the city has 500 pieces of equipment working to keep the streets clear for the morning commute.
