Who Cares How They Line Up, Patriots Defense Looked Good

BOSTON (CBS) - Whether the Patriots defense is in a 3-4, 4-3, 2-5, 8675309... they looked good Thursday night.

The Pats were all over the place in their 31-14 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  If this is the new scheme, then this is a welcomed look.

"We came out and Coach was talking about starting really fast. That was one of our main goals and I think we did a pretty good job with that," said linebacker Jerod Mayo.

Mayo finished the games with five tackles and two sacks, and he seemed free.  He looked like the player they drafted out of Tennessee.  The three-year veteran has done a great job with his assignments over the years, and he's one of the best in the league.

But Thursday night, watching him rush the passer, with his speed was impressive.

"It does feel good having those big workhorses in front of me," Mayo said. "All those guys played well tonight. It just feels good to be able to run around with them."

"I thought we stopped them with defense," coach Bill Belichick said afterwards. "One thing we wanted to do was get off to a good start. We definitely didn't do that last week and I thought we had a little energy."
