Whitey Bulger To Be Arraigned On 19 Murder Counts

BOSTON (AP) -- Reputed crime boss James "Whitey" Bulger is due back in federal court this week to be arraigned on a racketeering indictment charging him for his alleged role in 19 killings.

Bulger, the former leader of the notorious Winter Hill Gang, eluded authorities for 16 years until he was caught in Santa Monica, Calif., on June 22.

Bulger was also a top-echelon FBI informant who provided the agency with information on the New England Mob, his gang's main rivals.

His corrupt relationship with Boston FBI agents was a source of embarrassment for the agency. Former Agent John Connolly Jr. was convicted of racketeering charges for protecting Bulger and his cohort, Stephen "The Rifleman" Flemmi.

The 81-year-old Bulger is due to be arraigned Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Boston.
