Whitey Bulger Items Up For Auction Next Week

BOSTON (CBS) -- U.S. Marshals have released photos of items owned by convicted gangster James "Whitey" Bulger and his girlfriend, Catherine Greig, that will be auctioned off next week.

Nine photos of the various items, all confiscated from Bulger and Greig's Santa Monica, California apartment after he was captured in 2011, were posted by the U.S. Marshals to the image sharing site Flickr.

The items, including a rat-shaped mug, the hat Bulger was wearing when he was captured, and his Stanley Cup ring, will be auctioned off on Saturday, June 25 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. The auction, run by Gaston & Sheehan Auctioneers, Inc., will be simulcast online.

That 1986 Montreal Canadiens Stanley Cup ring is believed to have once been owned by Chris 'Knuckles' Nilan, who was once married to the daughter of Bulger's ex-girlfriend Teresa Stanley. A court filing released in 2013 revealed that, of the items confiscated by the government, the ring was the only one Bulger wanted to hang on to.

The proceeds from the auction of the items will be divided among the families of several people murdered by Bulger or his associates, as well as several people the United States District Court found Bulger extorted.

Bulger was convicted in 2013 of participating in 11 murders in the 1970s and 80s, and is currently serving a life sentence.
