What a Storm...

This storm speaks for itself...what a monster!  With the atmosphere all bottled up, the mature cyclone will spin offshore for the next few days.  We will be on the western periphery of it but still it will impact us, especially our coastline.

We will avoid substantial rain from this storm...but it will be wet at times as waves of moisture work in from the north and east.  The Cape and the Islands will receive the most rain with the rest of Eastern Mass getting showers.  With that said, pinpointing how much rain is tough in these situations.  Models don't handle stalled systems or ones that retrograde a bit very well...thus a lot of nowcasting is used in these situations.  This evening is a perfect example...I'm watching a slug of rain headed right for us from the Gulf of Maine...it's a pretty large area of rain and is steady.  None of the models are picking up on this moisture but it's safe to say that this will at the very least make for a wet night on the South Shore, Cape and Islands and will probably bring steady rain to Boston as well.  The crazy thing is while it will be raining in Boston, it will be clear in Worcester...or close to it...truly the periphery!

The other issue is the threat to the beaches...namely east facing beaches.  This will be a prolonged pounding with gusty N/NE winds and large waves that could exceed 15 feet.  Our astronomical tides are not high so the threat for coastal flooding is minimal but beach erosion could be a major problem.  The National Seashore is particularly vulnerable and after the Winter they had this is not good news.

The large cut-off low will finally start spinning away on Thursday and allowing for surface high pressure to finally establish itself.  The good news is that when it finally does get to us, it will also be slow to depart leaving us with several dry days including most of the upcoming weekend.
