Wellesley Man Charged With OUI After Hit And Run

WELLESLEY (CBS) – Police have charged a 21-year-old man allegedly responsible for a Friday night hit and run that injured a cyclist in Wellesley.

The 47-year-old cyclist from Framingham was hit around 7 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Hampshire and Bristol Roads. Police say the biker was wearing a helmet and reflectors on his jacket and bike at the time of the accident.

Witnesses said the driver appeared to be disoriented before speeding away from the area.

"You could tell speed was factor in this," Wellesley Police Chief Terrence Cunningham told WBZ-TV's Paul Burton on Saturday. "He hit a telephone pole and you can see dragging marks on the road from where the bike was dragged down the street."

The cyclist was unconscious and unresponsive when paramedics arrived. He was transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, but suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Connor Campanelli, 21, of Wellesley, was identified as the suspect in the hit and run.

A witness who was driving in front of Campanelli saw the crash and called police.

Amy Papavassiliou says she was horrified after seeing a cyclist laying on the ground unconscious after being hit by a pickup truck

"I think I was just shocked that someone could just leave somebody at the scene in such bad condition," she told WBZ.

Campanelli voluntarily came to the police station Friday night. He was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with personal injury, operating under the influence of liquor and causing serious injury accident, negligent operation, speeding, and failure to keep right for oncoming traffic.

The Wellesley resident was released on $3,000 bail. He is expected to be arraigned Monday in Dedham District Court.

WBZ-TV's Paul Burton contributed to this report.
