Welker 'On The Same Page' With Patriots Regarding Future In New England
INDIANAPOLIS (CBS) - Wes Welker led the league in receptions and finished second in receiving yards. He reached those marks, conveniently, in a contract year, so the 30-year-old is certainly due for a big payday.
Despite his impending free agency, Welker appeared completely calm when discussing his future with the Patriots.
"I think we're all on the same page as far as my future here and everything like that," Welker told the media on Wednesday. "So really, the main thing we're concentrating on is this game. That's pretty much what it boils down to.
"Everything else will take care of itself in the end."
Welker, who's averaged 111 catches for 1,221 yards and six touchdowns per year in his five seasons in New England, said he's always wanted to play for the Patriots.
"I thought it would be a good fit, even when I played in Miami [in 2005 and '06]," Welker said. "I've always thought about the type of guys that they've had here and the way they play and their style of offense and things like that. I think going into it, even when we were in talks about possibly coming here, I was just basically telling my agent to just make it happen and get me there, because I knew it would be a great fit for me.
"Everything, from the offense they had to Tom [Brady] as a quarterback to the type of tough, hard-nosed football players that they've had here in the past and presently. They've kind of created an identity of being that, of being hard-nosed, tough football players that go out there and take care of business on Sundays. I feel like it's a mentality that I've tried to bring every Sunday being in this league and really bringing it here and being a part of has been something special."
