Welcome Weekend Relief
Well many areas had a beautiful sunrise this morning as clear skies and crisp cool temperatures made it feel like a classic New England fall morning. What was interesting was the temperature differentials we noticed this morning. Places like Taunton, MA and even the Maine coastline dropped to the middle/upper 20's while areas farther northwest into the Green Mountains/Berkshires were in middle to upper 30's! The reason for this weird spread in temperatures was the scattered clouds that were hit and miss from town to town. These clouds will dissipate late morning and will provide us with a sunny start to the day. Towards afternoon some high clouds will approach from the west associated with an approaching warm front. Regardless, lots of sun will be found with seasonal high temperatures around 50 degrees.
Tonight clouds continue to increase as a warm front passes overhead. A spot shower or two will be possible far nw areas, although the vast majority of us will stay dry. As a result of the cloud cover overnight lows will be warm near 40 degrees.
Veterans Day will feature some morning clouds, however as the warm front continues to lift north the sun will gradually emerge and should yield a partly sunny finish to the day. With southwesterly flow warmer air will be ushered into the region, resulting in temperatures boosting to near 60 degrees! A fabulous way to end the weekend and a great opportunity for you to enjoy some of the parades that will be ongoing as we honor the those who have fought for this great country.
Heading into Monday, we will see yet another boost in temperatures. Strengthening winds will usher in warmer and moister air from the south. As a result, some clouds may form during the afternoon, but despite any cloud cover temperatures will spike well into the 60's, with some inland locations possibly reaching 70 degrees! November weather at its best! As we head into Monday night clouds will be on the increase ahead of an approaching cold front.
Starting the day off the day Tuesday, showers will approach from west to east ahead of an approaching cold front. As this front crosses the region it will be losing upper-level support as the best dynamics lift north into southern Canada. As a result, most showers should be light in nature and will not be widespread. However, with these showers will be a lot of cloud cover. Also, warmest temperatures will likely be reached in the morning as the approaching cold front will bring us a reality check, dropping temperatures Tuesday afternoon into the upper 40's behind the front. With gusty northwest winds it will feel cruelly cold out there!
Wednesday and beyond we see a return to typical November weather. There will be LOTS of sun as a strong area of high pressure builds in amongst a relatively uneventful zonal upper-level flow. This uneventful zonal flow is the product of a positive North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), which effectively deamplifies the jet stream and inhibits any major "troughiness". As we head towards Thanksgiving, the NAO appears to flip back negative. This MAY bring back a stormy and unsettled pattern, but at this point it is far too early to tell.
On a more wintry note, there are some ski resorts that have already opened for Veterans Day weekend! These include Killington VT, Okemo VT, and Sunday River, ME. It would be a good time to wax the skis/board ahead of the upcoming ski season, and if the NAO I mentioned before makes the negative flip as forecast there could be a wintry treat on the way for our New England ski resorts!
