Wegmans 'Very Interested' In Opening At Fenway's Landmark Center

BOSTON (CBS/AP) — Boston Mayor Thomas Menino says Wegmans plans to open a supermarket in the city's Fenway neighborhood.

The store will be the Rochester, N.Y.-based chain's second in Massachusetts. It opened its first store in Northborough in 2011.

A spokesperson for Wegmans failed to confirm the supermarket is definitely opening in the Fenway neighborhood but said the company is "very interested."

"Discussions with the developer are underway, and we anticipate that an acceptable agreement can be reached in the near future," Joe Natale of Wegmans told WBZ NewsRadio 1030.

Menino made several other announcements during an upbeat address on Monday at the annual meeting of the Boston Municipal Research Bureau. But he dropped no hints as to whether he plans to seek an unprecedented sixth term in November.

Menino said construction would begin in late spring on a long-stalled development at the site of the old Filene's building in Downtown Crossing.

He also announced an $11 million investment in Millennium Park in West Roxbury, and a new electronic learning imitative which includes bringing 10,000 mobile devices to city schools over the next two years.
