Weekend In Jeopardy?
The weekend is off and running but it's pretty slow out of the gate. A warm front to our south produced inundating rain with many towns picking up an inch if not more. The soaking downpours have moved out for now but it's still rather miserable out with lingering mist, drizzle and dense fog. Now we look ahead to Father's Day weekend and the hope is for some sunshine and we'll get it...just not easily.
A slow-moving cold front will move through in the morning with some showers along it and then slide offshore by midday. The problem is an upper level disturbance will move right in behind it during the afternoon with a cold pool of air aloft. The result will be building afternoon clouds (and a few intervals of sun) but with that cold pool above us, there will be enough instability for pop-up showers to develop in the afternoon. Temps will be limited to the 70-75 degree range due to the cloud cover and scattered showers.
That upper level disturbance will spin up an area of low pressure at the surface along the cold front in our coastal waters...juts far enough away so that the wet weather will stay off the coast over the water on Father's Day but also close enough to have biting my finger nails. There will be enough energy aloft for some fair-weather cumulus to form in the morning but as the day goes on, the air will become more stable and any clouds will melt away. Temps on Sunday should reach 80 degrees away from the coast. Near the coast, with a developing sea breeze, temps will top out in the 70s.
