Weather Causing NH Fireworks Delays, Changes
HAMPTON FALLS, N.H. (CBS) - At the Wakeda Campground in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire, up to 2,000 people will celebrate the holiday weekend.
"It's family time," said Tracy Shepardson of Athol, Massachusetts. "Get away from all the stress, hustle and bustle."
After a long winter, some potential rain won't keep people away.
"We don't really care about the weather," said Janice Herrin of Princeton, Massachusetts. "We're up here at the beach, our blenders are going, we've got mudslides, and lots of ice, and the family's all coming up."
But, the weather is causing a logistical issue in several communities.
In Manchester, New Hampshire, tonight's fireworks over the Merrimack River are postponed until Saturday.
"So the only difference is the 39th Army Band will not be able to play for entertainment," said Andy Vachon of the Manchester Parks and Recreation Department. "So, we lose the entertainment."
And in Portsmouth, organizers also have delayed tonight's annual show at South Playground until Saturday as well.
"Our primary concern is safety," said Rusty Wilson of the Portsmouth Parks and Recreation Department. "So the last thing we want to do is to have 10,000 to 20,000 people sitting out here and have a thunderstorm come through and create all that havoc."
New Hampshire tourism officials are expecting possible record numbers of visitors this holiday weekend, anticipating some 880,000 tourists between July 3 and July 7.
