Watertown Neighborhood Trying To Move Forward After Violent Shootout And Manhunt

BOSTON (CBS) -- Some flowers are blooming on the normally quiet Laurel Street where Christine Yajko played fetch with her puppy named Remington, Monday morning.

Yajko was trying to forget the wild shootout early Friday between police and the Tsarnaev brothers.

Dozens of the more than 200-plus shots fired, cut into homes and so did shrapnel from the pipe bombs tossed at police by the brothers.

Police evidence flags were still flapping in the breeze Monday.

Peter Khavias peeked from his window as bullets tore into his cars out front. He watched Dzhokhar Tsarnaev reloading rifles for his older brother Tamerlan during their gun battle with police.

On Monday, Mike Doucette recounted watching the shootout from his bedroom.

"It was a war zone," he said.

State Police worked the next street over, canvassing house-to-house for any new nugget of information or evidence.

Doucette now wishes he could erase the gun battle from his mind.

"The older brother was out there walking toward the cops, shooting at them and throwing pipe bombs," Doucette said.

By that time, T Officer Richard Donahue lay wounded in a driveway around the corner.

But when Tamerlan ran out of bullets, charging the other officers, one tackled him.

They scattered when Dzhokhar jumped into the stolen SUV and drove at them, running over his wounded brother and dragging him some 30 feet.

That spot is now celebrated in chalk with "U.S.A" written on the ground.
