Warrant Issued For Suspect In Newburyport Home Invasion
NEWBURYPORT (CBS) - An arrest warrant has been issued for a Seabrook, New Hampshire man in connection with a house break in the Turkey Hill road area of Newburyport.
Police say it was a neighbor who was able to get 33-year-old Keith Babcock's license plate number as he fled the scene.
After a back slider was broken, the house break was interrupted by the homeowner who made a harrowing 911 call to police who had no idea if the intruder was still inside.
"I heard a big crash and then I opened my bedroom door and I heard footsteps and I said 'hello'. I heard footsteps run and went back into my bedroom. I have one child across the hall and I'm too scared to open the door, and I have one child in my bedroom."
The resident had just put her one and three year old children down for a nap. The older child could be heard in the background screaming and clearly frightened by the ordeal.
"The outcome could have been much worse. Once he realized people were home he fled the scene," said Newburyport police Lt. Rick Siemasko.
The neighborhood is on the alert.
"A lot of us checked in with each other to make sure everyone knew what was going on. We shared contact information in case we saw anything suspicious," said neighbor Tom Guillou.
Police say Babcock grabbed a package on the doorstep, but was looking for more until he was "surprised". "It's a pretty safe neighborhood. We're taken aback by it," said neighbor Lisa DeGloria.
