Warmer Weather Coming, Temps Could Hit 60

BOSTON (CBS) - Better late than never is what they say right?

So we didn't have a January thaw this year, good things come to those who wait and our February thaw has arrived!

THE FORECAST

Over the next three days we will see the most substantial snow melting thus far.

High temperatures over the next three days will reach the lower 40's on Wednesday, near 50 on Thursday and well into the 50's on Friday.

It is not out of the question that a few locations could even reach 60 degrees on Friday afternoon!

This would be the first time reaching that mark since before Thanksgiving!

So is this it?

Is this the end of our snowy, cold winter?

Not by a long shot.

This weekend we plunge right back into the 30's and strong winds will make it feel like the teens. And we are also tracking a potential wintry storm for early next week, what could be our first real snow accumulation since Groundhog Day.

A LOOK BACK

I surely don't have to remind anyone how brutal this winter has been, but here are just a few weather stats:

From January 3rd to February 3rd we had just 1 day that was 40 degrees or higher - January 18th (and by the way it was exactly 40).

In a typical January and February, we average about 8 days that reach 50 degrees or higher. So far this year we have had just three and the first two were on January 1st and 2nd!

And who could forget January 24th?

We had a high of 13 and a low of -2 in Boston - the coldest day in 6 years!

And then there was the snow, the third snowiest January on record followed by 10.4 inches of snow on the first two days of February had just about everybody waving the white flag.

Our snow depth was at record levels in early February, reaching 30-to-35 inches in many locations including the Boston area.

In the last two weeks we have cut into that snowpack significantly even though temperatures haven't been all that warm.

Thanks to a halt in the parade of storms and a strong February sun, the snow depth now stands between 15-to-20 inches on average.
