Wareham Man Accused Of Carjackings Involving 75-Year-Old Woman, Couple With Baby
WAREHAM (CBS) – A Wareham man carjacked a 75-year-old woman, forced her to drive to a nearby ATM, and proceeded to carjack another vehicle after that woman managed to alert an officer, police said.
Officials say 31-year-old Matthew Mullen forced the victim into her car as she was loading groceries at Stop & Shop on Cranberry Highway around 3 p.m. on Thursday.
Mullen allegedly ordered the woman to drive to a nearby bank to withdraw money.
That effort proved unsuccessful, and as the two drove away from the bank property, the woman noticed a Wareham police cruiser at the intersection of Midway St. and Onset Ave.
She slammed on the brakes and jumped out, alerting a police officer to the situation.
Mullen, who was still in the car, hopped into the driver's side and sped off, according to police.
A short distance away, he allegedly forced his way into the car of a couple and their two-month-old baby, telling them he had a gun.
Police officers quickly located the car, surrounded it and arrested Mullen.
Mullen is charged with four counts of kidnapping, assault to rob a person over age 60 while armed, larceny of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, speeding, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.
He's due in court on Friday.
