Wareham Woman Uses Winning Scratch Ticket To Buy Hotel Room For Homeless Man

WAREHAM (CBS) – A local lottery winner is helping out a man down on his luck.

Sophia Andrade won $200 on a scratch ticket, and instead of treating herself, she decided to use the money to buy a homeless man named Glenn Williams a hotel room for three nights in Wareham.

Andrade had spotted Williams panhandling on the side of the road when she pulled up to a stop sign. With temperatures dipping below zero across the state over the weekend, she didn't want him to be left out in the cold.

"I knew that God had put him in my path for a reason," she said. "I knew instantly that the money wasn't mine, it was given to me to help someone else."

The single mother of three also set up a GoFundMe account for the man, and so far she's raised more than $5,000.

She's hoping her act of generosity will inspire others.

"I want my children to know about compassion. Whether someone has a million dollars or one dollar, you should treat everybody the same," she said. "Everybody deserves respect."
