Waltham Compounding Center Welcomes Surprise Inspections, More Oversight
WALTHAM (CBS) - As pharmacy techs mixed medicines for specific customers, one Waltham compounding center said they welcome more state oversight.
Steve Bernardi, co-owner of Johnson Compounding, laments the black eye his industry has been dealt by the deepening scandal at New England Compounding Center in Framingham, where investigators believe big batches of injectable steroids were illegally made and shipped while contaminated by fungal meningitis amid shabby quality control.
Even as Gov. Deval Patrick announced a crackdown yesterday, state inspectors were already knee-deep in their first surprise inspection.
State officials would not name the target or the results of the surprise inspection.
But their focus will be on compounders who make the same kind of sterile injectables that went awry at NECC.
At Johnson Compounding, the worry is that customers inundated with the bad news at NECC, may lump all compounders together.
That's why Bernardi welcomes to extra oversight as a way to prove he is a legitimate compounding center.
