Walsh Frustrated By Lack Of Dialogue With Protesters
BOSTON (CBS) -- Boston Mayor Marty Walsh says that overall, police have handled recent protests well, allowing demonstrators to march without letting them block major highways.
But Walsh does say he is frustrated by a lack of a dialogue with protesters, and worries about how much the demonstrations are costing the city.
Protests have taken place several times in recent weeks in Boston and around the country after grand juries did not indict officers following the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner.
The fact that there's no clearly defined leader among the protesters makes it tough to communicate, Walsh told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Mark Katic. He said the city has been trying to get the conversation going by talking to ministers and youth groups about the way police officers do their jobs.
"Holding a sign saying 'Black Lives Matter,' is important, but we're actually having conversations about it," Walsh said. "I don't know any other of the protesters that are at any of the tables with us discussing these issues."
Walsh said he's also worried about the cost of protecting the city during these protests.
"That's a problem," he said. "Protest all day, but let's have some conversations about it."
