Murder Suspect Surrenders After Hours-Long Standoff
WALPOLE (CBS) – A local man arrested for murder overnight had previously gained the media's attention as a man who had turned his life around.
Thirty-three-year-old Kyle Williams was arrested early Wednesday morning after an hours-long stand-off with police in a Walpole apartment complex.
Williams has several arrests on his record and spent time in prison in the early 2000's but became a success story Graduating from Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology.
He was the school's student commencement speaker at graduation.
"All of us at Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology are devastated to hear this news about Kyle. He was a model student during his time at our college. Our thoughts go out to all who are involved," said a statement from the school.
Williams' had been recognized locally and nationally from in the Boston Globe and the New York Times.
On Wednesday, Williams was arraigned on charges connecting him to the Jan. 11 murder of 21-year-old Shaquille Broder in Dorchester, a spokesman for the Suffolk County District Attorney's office said.
A woman who said she is Williams' mother was clearly upset after his arrest.
"To get a call that there's helicopters around for my little son, SWAT Team, they got bulletproof vests, they got f---ing snipers. They got all this s--- out here for what – for my son? " Cassandra Williams said.
She said her son was in the middle of turning his life around.
"He's been doing so good. He's been doing speeches to all the kids in Boston public schools. He changed his life around. He has children. . . he has brothers and sisters who love him. He's been working," she added.
A SWAT Team and crisis negotiators were called to the Preserve Apartments Tuesday night. Police say Williams almost surrendered himself several times but would turn around and go back inside.
Williams eventually gave himself up after midnight and no one was hurt. He did not have any weapons, police said.
"He wasn't ready until the very final moments when he finally turned himself in," Walpole Police Chief John Carmichael said.
Carmichael said Boston police notified his department at about 5 p.m. they were looking for someone involved in a homicide in the city. Residents had to be evacuated until police deemed the situation safe.
The prosecution believes three other people were involved in the murder but did not say whether they had been arrested.
Williams is being held without bail and is scheduled to appear back in court on March 14.
