Surveillance Video Shows Train Slamming Into Pickup Truck
WAKEFIELD (CBS) – A crash involving a pickup truck and a Commuter Rail train in Wakefield was caught on a nearby business's surveillance camera.
An MBTA spokesman said a pickup truck driver maneuvered around the lowered gates on Broadway Street. They said the signals warning drivers of an oncoming train were on prior to the crash.
The train then slammed into the truck, and surveillance video shows the train pushing the vehicle for several hundred feet.
The driver of the truck, a 70-year-old man, was taken to an area hospital by MedFlight with serious injuries.
"At the beginning I was crying, I was shaking and I was calling 911," witness Christine Pizzi said.
No one on the train was injured.
"We were just going along normally, and then there was a bump and everything suddenly stopped and we were all jolted," train passenger Anne George told WBZ-TV.
The speed limit for trains in the area of the crash is 30 MPH. According to the MBTA, the train was operating at 29 MPH when it hit the truck.
Shuttle buses were arranged to transport train passengers to their destinations.
The truck was removed from the tracks, with its rear right wheel dangling.
